ISSUE #23 - SEPTEMBER 2026
Planted! at Tokyo Game Show 2026
This month, Jon had the pleasure of showcasing Planted! at Tokyo Game Show 2026. The five-day gaming event took place in Makuhari Messe in Japan from 17th - 21st September, featuring upcoming games, playable demos, showcases, esports, cosplay and indie titles like our very own Planted!
Jon was in Tokyo as part of a new Creative Wales trade mission! Wales had a strong presence in the Indie hall and Planted! was front and centre on both the Cloth Cat Games stand and the Curveball Games stand! Loads of attendees played the game, adding it to their wishlists and demanding the Switch version! Jon got to explore the huge halls over the three main days and got a better understanding of the Japanese market. He looks forward to returning again next year! A massive thank you to Kathryn Wolfe-Adams, Beth Romais and Carl Plested for organising and supporting the trade mission. Also a big shout out to all the other companies and exciting games on the Wales stand. We're on the cusp of a new games revolution in Wales!

This month our talented trainees (and Harpy) got to grips with Toon Boom Storyboard Pro, learning about the tools and responsibilities involved in creating fantastic, industry standard storyboards for production! Benedict Tomczyk-Bowen has almost a quarter of a century’s experience in the animation industry, primarily as a storyboarder in TV Animation, but also with forays into the Film and Advertising spaces. Having worked with most of the major animation studios, Benedict has contributed to shows globally and has also developed his own work for Nickelodeon. Thank you so much for imparting your expertise here at Cloth Cat Academy this month!
We had a fantastic weekend at Kotatsu Japanese Animation Festival, which was hosted at Chapter in Cardiff this month. We witnessed a superb selection of animated films from Japan, including Children of the Sea (2019), All You Need Is Kill (2025), Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro (1979) and Akira (1988). The festival also featured a masterclass from CGI artist Masaya Inaba, an electrifying live performance by JERO11, alongside a captivating collection of Japanese goods, comics, DVDs and collectables to explore! Cloth Cat are proud sponsors of the festival and we'd like to congratulate Eiko on a brilliantly successful 15th anniversary for Kotatsu! In case you missed it, the festival will also be taking place at Aberystwyth Arts Centre from 16th-18th October. To stay up to date with all things Kotatsu, subscribe to their newsletter here.
Cardiff Animation Nights
Cardiff Animation Nights returns this coming month with another awesome selection of indie animation sourced from inspiring filmmakers around the globe! From the comfort of our own homes, we'll be tuning in to enjoy a live, hour-long broadcast from the Cardiff Animation Nights YouTube Channel. Quick Draw: In The Loop took place on 17th September at Arthole in Cardiff. The casual screening and social event brought together animators in Cardiff to share their work and build a closer community of like-minded creatives. Animators were invited to submit a short looping animation centred on the theme of 'Fall'. Here's the submission from Cloth Cat's very own Head of Animation Development, Tom Lucas:
